Thread starter gotta go Start date Mar 5, Has anyone with the Cummins ISC engine had an oil pressure problem? For 3 years my gauge had read between 65 and 70 lbs when to rpm.

Then it started dropping. The first shop I went to said 50 lbs is within specs, no problem. Second shop, told me the gauge reads 12 lbs high, okay, still not reading what I'm used to seeing.

They then decided that the spin on filter had collapsed. Replaced that and oil pressure was right back up to what I expect.

All's good for the next 8, miles. Back to my saga, oil pressure dropping again, down to 40 lbs, truck seems a little sluggish, or is it my imagination? Into another shop, nothing wrong, within specs hysterical female syndrome. Agree to change out spin-on filter, pressure right back up. A month later, pressure is dropping. I pull into Petro, say change out filter, they do. All is good. By the next time it's time to do by-pass service, pressure is low again. Go into a shop with a good reputation for high performance and problem solving.

Am told there's no problem, gauge is just reading different as years and miles go by. I think it's getting the sags like me. I've been trying to ignore that gauge sitting at 50 lbs, but this week it kept dropping and got down to 35, along with red shut me off NOW light and buzzer. I was on the east coast and had a load back to Ohio, so I found a small shop and had him switch out the spin on.

Pressure is right back up to 70 lbs. This last mechanic suggested putting it on a dyno. Any other suggestions?

I know the location of unloader valve but honestly I don't want make you upset this Christmas day. Dec 25, 3. Dec 25, 4. It on top of the air compressor. Air compressor is located on the driver side right on the flywheel. You can change it without taking the air compressor out but it is going to a pain in the rear. Use small Allen keys to remove the two screw for the unloader. When installing the new one use a long screwdriver to push down the unloader valve and hold it, start one of the screws with a hand slowly.

Something to consider, just because you replaced the dryer cartridge, does not fix the purge valve or heater element. While the cartridge is important, the rest of the dryer can be malfunctioning. Also have you considered the governor? Working on the air compressor on a DD15 can be difficult, it is mounted at the rear of the engine on the drivers side, off of the accesory drive.

It has the power steering pump mounted to the end of the compressor. When getting into the compressor and other items running off the acessory drive, you really need to put things back together with new O-rings, seals, gaskets bolts and crush washers.

Ok so I rebuilt my engine in my 49 8n about 10 year ago. I did not do the oil pump I know I should have but I just didn't so thats that.

I didn't replace my oil pressure relief valve and spring either. Just like most everyone else I have 30 lbs cold and around 10 hot. I got my new spring and plunger today so I takes the old one out and on visual inspection they are both the same length but the old one seems to be a thinner steal so i gave it the squeeze test.

I think the scale tops out at 5 lbs. So it probably takes 6 or 7 lbs to compress the new one down. Well that got me thinking I wonder if the tension n the old spring changes when it heats up, I figured I would spare the wife's scale from the melty circles caused by my silly experiments. I am going to say that weather or not it does is irrelevant because it was bad eithr way.

For example, you may have a beta ratio or a beta sub 5 meaning particles larger than 5 microns equal to This means 10 particles upstream of the filter would be divided by 1 downstream of the filter. In other words, for every 10 particles coming in, one gets through.

The result is much cleaner oil being returned to the sump. Smaller soot suspension and polar insolubles that are not controlled by the full-flow filter can now be taken out of the system.

When combined with a full-flow filter, bypass filtration offers the benefits of lower wear generation rates, lower oil consumptionhigher combustion efficiency and longer oil life. In a case study performed by General Motors and published by the Society of Automotive Engineers SAEit was determined that engine service life could be extended eight times when 5-micron filtration is implemented vs. Obviously, having cleaner oil is better for the reliability of the engine. It will need to be changed eventually no matter how clean you keep it.

The depletion of these additives will ultimately be the reason for the oil change.The oil pump maintains oil pressure to lubricate internal components. Most oil pumps are positive displacement pumps, which deliver more oil than an engine needs. Its purpose is to open when engine oil pressure reaches a certain value. A problem with the pressure relief valve can cause damage to the engine oil filter and to the engine itself.

This allows the oil pump to rotate faster and distribute more oil when engine RPMs increase. The pump turns and pulls oil from the pan through a pickup tube. It then pushes pressurized oil through the oil filter and into the engine. Oil is pulled into the housing and through the gear teeth, where it is pressurized. The oil then exits the pump outlet and is sent to the engine. Oil enters the housing and is pulled into space between the lobes. The lobes mesh, pressurizing oil to be sent throughout the engine.

Under normal pressure conditions, the oil pressure relief valve is forced down against a spring. As a result, oil goes directly through the pump to the engine.

This allows oil to flow back into the crankcase preventing excessive oil pressure.

The spring tension of the relief valve determines the maximum oil pressure. Oil pump pressure relief valves can fail in either the open or closed position. This can cause damage to the engine oil filter and to the engine itself. This results in a lack of oil pressure and catastrophic engine damage. Obviously, this is an expensive repair. There is no sure way to prevent relief valve failure. In some cases, the valve just wears out over time. However, regular oil changes help prevent sludge and varnish build up, both of which can cause the valve to stick.
